Coastal Zone Management System

Objective

To Design, development of Coastal Zone Management System (CZMS) for the following ecologically sensitive/important coastal areas of Gulf of Kachchh, Karnataka, Sunderbans, Lakshadweep and Andaman. Thus a system must be made which would estimate the health status of coral reefs in a particular coastal area based on three indices namely, Warning Index, Ecological Index and Damage Index.

This project was developed for the ecologically sensitive/important coastal areas of Gulf of Kutch, Karnataka, Sunderbans, Lakshadweep and Andaman. It caters to the requirements of zoning out these five important coastal areas and providing a means for formulating management strategies and plans. This application has been developed so as to help in calculating the health of Coral Reef. Based on this calculation scientists can analyze and make decision regarding the various factors and environment that would affect the health of the coral reefs.

This application is developed for the ecologically sensitive/important coastal areas of Gulf of Kutch, Karnataka, Sunderbans, Lakshadweep and Andaman. The application allows user to generate Warning Index (WI), Ecological Index (EI), and Damage Index (DI) using the Coral Reef Health Module. It allows the user to maintain a yearly Sea-Surface Temperature Database for its use while calculating the Warning Index (WI). The module allows the addition of locations for the collection of data which would help assess the condition of the Coral Reefs. Based on the data collected, the module will then calculate the Warning Index, Damage Index and Ecological Index which would act as inputs to estimate the Coral Reef Health Index (CRHI). This CRHI would then be used to analyze the health of the coral reefs in the particular coastal region.

Application Customization Approach

Using the condition map and point data, various modules will be generated such as the Coral Reef Health Module, Mangrove Health Module, Habitat Condition and Vulnerability index for critical/vital habitat, Coastal Zone Management Module, Ecological Status of the MPAs, Site Selection for Mangrove Plantation etc.

Coastal Zone Management Module classifies the Coastal maps under four categories namely: Preservation, conservation, development and utilization using the user input parameters like Wetland diversity, Vital/critical habitat condition, Extent, Landuse /Landcover changes, Socio-Economic condition & dependency, Geomorphology, Shoreline Change, Water Quality and Suspended sediment dynamics.

  • A provision is provided in the CZMS software to add data collection points according to their GPS locations.
  • This helps in the maintenance of a year-wise in-situ parameters database. The software also validates the addition of the points to the particular coastal area only on which the user is working.
